You sit down to watch the game, open your IPTV app and… nothing. The playlist spins forever, you get an "invalid URL" message, or the screen stays black while the audio plays. When IPTV is not working, the cause is almost always one of a dozen familiar suspects, and most take minutes to fix. Below are the 12 most common errors, grouped by symptom, with concrete steps for each.
One quick distinction: if the stream does start but keeps pausing, stuttering or spinning, that is buffering, not a failure to play. We cover that separately in our IPTV buffering fix guide. This article focuses on streams that won't start at all, or start in a broken state.
Step zero: test your playlist link
The first question with any IPTV problem is simple: is it the app, the device, or the provider's server? Rather than guessing, check. AFKast's free M3U checker tells you whether your playlist URL responds and whether it actually contains channels.
- If the check fails: the problem is very likely the link itself or the provider (wrong address, expired subscription, server down).
- If the check passes: the playlist is healthy, so look at your device, your network or your app settings instead.
Quick diagnosis table: symptom → cause → fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist won't load at all | Server not responding, connection issue | Run the link through the M3U checker |
| "Invalid URL" error | Missing or extra characters, wrong format | Copy and paste the link again |
| Xtream Codes login failed | Server URL missing http:// or port, wrong password | Enter the full URL with http:// and port |
| Everything stopped overnight | Subscription expired | Check the expiry date in your provider's panel |
| Black screen, audio plays | Codec or hardware acceleration mismatch | Toggle hardware decoding |
| Picture but no sound | Audio format, wrong track, output setting | Check the audio track and output device |
| Some channels work, others don't | That channel's source is down | Let Auto Failover use a backup source |
| No EPG / TV guide | Missing XMLTV URL, wrong time offset | Add the EPG URL, fix the time zone |
| "Max connections reached" | Too many devices at once | Stop playback on other devices |
| Only fails on home Wi-Fi | ISP or DNS blocking | Switch to a different DNS server |
| Worked yesterday, crashes today | Outdated app, corrupted cache | Update the app and clear cache |
| SSL / HTTPS certificate errors | Device date or time is wrong | Turn on automatic date and time |
The 12 most common IPTV errors and how to fix them
1. The playlist won't load at all
If the app keeps loading and eventually shows an empty list or a timeout, either the server can't be reached or your device has a connection problem.
- Open a website or another streaming app on the same device to confirm the internet is working.
- Paste the URL into the M3U playlist checker.
- If the checker fails too, the provider's server may be temporarily down. Wait 15–30 minutes and try again.
2. "Invalid URL" or "invalid playlist" error
This usually means the link is malformed. Links copied from chat apps or emails often pick up a trailing space, a line break or a shortened, truncated ending.
- Make sure the link starts with http:// or https://.
- If your username and password are inside the link (for example
username=...&password=...), check that both are complete. - Keep parameters such as
type=m3u_plusexactly as your provider gave them. - Instead of typing a long URL with a TV remote, send it from your phone. Our guide on how to add an M3U IPTV playlist walks you through it.
3. Xtream Codes login error
"Login failed", "authentication error" or "can't connect to server" is most often caused by an incomplete server address.
- Enter the server URL with protocol and port, e.g.
http://your-server.com:8080. Your provider supplies the port; don't guess it. - Don't add paths such as
/get.phpor/player_api.php. The base address and port are enough. - Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Turn off auto-capitalization on your keyboard.
- Still stuck? Build an M3U link from the same credentials and test it. We explain the difference in Xtream Codes vs M3U.
4. Your subscription has expired
If a playlist that worked perfectly yesterday is suddenly empty or your login is rejected, check the subscription first. Providers usually cut access the moment it expires, often without any warning.
- Look up the expiry date in your provider's customer area or the welcome email they sent you.
- With Xtream Codes, some players show the expiry date in the account info screen.
- If you've just renewed, the provider may have issued a new link or password. Update your details.
5. Black screen but the audio plays
If you can hear the stream, the connection is fine. The problem is decoding the video, typically because the channel uses a codec your device can't handle in hardware (H.265/HEVC on some older boxes, for example).
- In the app's player settings, toggle hardware acceleration (turn it off if it's on, on if it's off) and reopen the channel.
- If the channel has HD and SD versions, try the other one.
- If it only happens on 4K/HDR channels, your device may simply not support that format.
AFKast uses the mpv playback engine with hardware decoding for H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 on compatible devices, which noticeably cuts down on black-screen issues. That is one reason the choice of IPTV player matters.
6. Picture but no sound
- Check that neither the device nor the TV is muted and that the right output (TV speakers, soundbar, HDMI) is selected.
- Open the audio track menu during playback. Some channels carry several languages, and an empty track may be selected.
- Using a soundbar or AV receiver? Turn audio passthrough off and try again. Some setups can't pass AC3/E-AC3 audio through.
7. Some channels work, others don't
When most of the list plays but specific channels won't open, the cause is almost always that channel's source: the stream has dropped on the provider's side or its address has changed. A player can't fix a dead source, but a smart one can work around it.
- Wait a few minutes and reopen the channel.
- If the playlist has another version of the same channel, try it.
- AFKast's Auto Failover switches to a backup automatically when the main source fails, as long as the playlist includes one.
- If it persists, report the channel name to your provider.
8. The EPG / TV guide is missing
Channels play but the program guide is empty or the times are off? That's an EPG data issue. We explain how it works in what is EPG and how to add an XMLTV guide.
- Ask your provider whether they supply a separate XMLTV (EPG) URL and add it in the app.
- Refresh the EPG manually. The first download can take a few minutes with large files.
- If programs are shifted by a few hours, adjust the EPG time offset (time zone).
9. Connection limit reached
Most IPTV subscriptions allow a fixed number of simultaneous connections. If someone is watching in the living room and someone else on a phone, the second device may be refused or cut off after a few seconds.
- Stop playback on other devices. Apps left running in the background can hold a connection too.
- After closing an app, the server can take a minute or two to release the connection.
- If you regularly watch on several screens, ask your provider about a multi-connection plan.
10. ISP or DNS blocking
If the playlist works on mobile data but not on your home broadband, your internet provider may be blocking certain addresses at DNS level.
- Change the DNS server on your router or device to a well-known public DNS service.
- Restart the router and the device afterwards.
- We cover the pros and cons of VPNs in our IPTV security and VPN guide.
Note: These steps are only meant for access problems with a service you've legally paid for. Don't use them to reach content that has been blocked by court order for copyright reasons, and always follow the laws of your country.
11. Outdated app or corrupted cache
- Install the latest version from Google Play, the App Store or the Microsoft Store.
- On Android and Android TV, go to Settings → Apps → AFKast → Storage and clear the cache (just the cache, not the data, at first).
- Removing and re-adding the playlist resets any corrupted list data.
- Finally, fully power-cycle the device. Standby on a TV box is not a real restart.
On Android TV or Google TV, our IPTV player for Android TV page covers installation and first-time setup.
12. Wrong date or time on the device
Surprisingly common: if the device's date is wrong, HTTPS certificates can't be validated, so the playlist, EPG or login fails completely. Common on TV boxes left unplugged for a while.
- Turn on automatic date and time in the device settings.
- Make sure the correct time zone is selected.
- Restart the app and refresh the playlist.
When should you contact your IPTV provider?
In these situations the problem is the service, not the player, and opening a support ticket is the fastest route:
- The M3U checker shows your link isn't responding and you're sure the details are correct.
- You get the same error on different devices and different internet connections.
- Your login is rejected even though your subscription is still active.
- Specific channels have been down for hours, or no EPG URL was ever provided.
When you write to support, include the exact error message, your device model, whether you use M3U or Xtream Codes and when the problem started.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my IPTV suddenly stop working?
The most common causes are an expired subscription, a temporary server outage at the provider, a changed playlist link or blocking by your internet provider. Testing the link with an M3U checker narrows it down quickly.
How do I fix an IPTV black screen with sound?
It is usually a codec or hardware acceleration mismatch. Toggle hardware decoding in the player settings and reopen the channel; if it only happens on 4K channels, your device may not support that format.
What is the correct server URL format for Xtream Codes?
Start with http:// or https:// and add the port your provider gave you, for example http://server.com:8080. Don't add extra paths, and remember usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
How can I check if my M3U link is working?
Paste it into the free M3U checker on the AFKast website. It shows whether the server responds and whether the playlist contains channels.
Some IPTV channels work and others don't. Is it the player?
Usually not; the source of the failing channel is down on the provider's side. If the playlist has a backup source, AFKast's Auto Failover switches to it automatically; otherwise report it to your provider.
Is "IPTV not working" the same as buffering?
No. When IPTV isn't working, the stream never starts; with buffering it starts but keeps pausing. Buffering is mostly about internet speed, Wi-Fi quality and buffer settings.
